Basic table manners for kids
Before Eating
- Wash hands before coming to the table
- Wait until everyone is seated before starting
- If your family practices it, say a short prayer or thanks
During the Meal
- Sit properly (no slouching or standing on chairs)
- Chew with mouth closed (no talking with food in mouth)
- Use utensils correctly instead of hands (when appropriate)
- Say “please” and “thank you” when asking for food
- Don’t reach across—ask for items to be passed
- Take small bites and eat at a steady pace
- Keep elbows off the table (this varies by culture, but it’s a common rule)
Conversation Manners
- Speak politely and don’t interrupt others
- Avoid loud noises like slurping or burping
- Stay at the table until you’re excused
After Eating
- Say “thank you” to whoever prepared the meal
- Help clear the table if age-appropriate
